Can AI practice User-Centered Design in Technical Documentation?

July 12, 2025

Empathy. The ability to see and feel the world through other people's eyes. This is perhaps my strongest characteristic, one that I have been building and nurturing all my life for various reasons. Even in my early childhood, I could see the situation crystal clear from multiple perspectives, especially from the eyes of my peers.

When I later became aware of this gift of mine, I started reading, researching, and building on it over time. This led to the sharpening of perhaps my most potent talent: the ability to convey instructions, and knowledge, or describe an event in written text so that it is extremely clear to the person for whom it is written.

To write a clear text or technical documentation, it takes much more than perfect grammatical knowledge of the language. First of all, with today's technology and the development of artificial intelligence, we can even compose text or documentation without speaking the language at all. However, what is most important in writing technical documentation is the ability to put oneself in the reader's shoes. This is a human trait that can never be replaced by artificial intelligence. We are emotional beings. Artificial intelligence can generate technical documentation for us, but the difference in quality when it is written by a human with sharpened emotional intelligence is substantial. In the work environment, people will quickly reject texts that are not written by a human because we, as human beings, want to have an emotional interaction. The time will soon come when we will not want to read a cold text created by a machine.

This thought has been on my mind for quite some time, especially in recent years since the idea that artificial intelligence will take over the jobs of writers has emerged.

Organizations, in addition to being agile, must strive for them to be fit as well. Can we have fit people with poor and inadequate documentation? They would spend a large part of their working time in frustration because they do not have adequate information. Frustration does not equal well-being.

When a person begins to read something with the hope of discovering a procedure or knowledge, and when what is presented in front of his eyes is written with real empathy from the reader's point of view, then the hormones dopamine and oxytocin begin to be secreted, which are responsible for the feelings of pleasure and trust. You can notice this in everyday conversation or correspondence with your loved ones or friends. When you explain something to someone from the heart and with love, they accept and respect your point of view because they recognize your human side. Whenever a conversation is reduced to a machine level, misunderstanding occurs. We agree that misunderstanding is the last thing we want to happen with technical documentation.
